Hollywood Lutheran Church

FACILITIES and CAMPUS

If you're a regular user of our facilities, or checking us out for a big event or filming, here is information that you may find helpful:

DURKEE HALL [3,000 sq. ft.]

Dedicated November 17, 1996 in loving appreciation of Pastor Emeritus Harry Durkee and Norma Durkee for their 31 years of service.

Our church basement has been continuously upgraded over its 80+ year history so that it's finally worthy of the designation as a "Hall." Thanks to the installation of ramps and now an elevator, Completely accessible for persons with disabilities or handicaps, Durkee Hall is our most-used room, by community groups at least 6 nights per week.

The Durkees are not the only ones now honored here. Durkee Hall was permanently re-floored in 2005 with porcelain tile (finally ending a succession of carpets), made possible with gifts and grants from:

Barnsdall Art Park, the Evelyne Worch Memorial Fund, the Estate of Florence Winifred Glynn, Holy Trinity Community Church, Hunnewell Pressman & Associates, and members and friends of Hollywood Lutheran Church.

Adjacent spaces:  An area that once held a "Coat Check" room next to the stair vestibule is now a new handicap-accessible bathroom. Now that two permanent store rooms have been created from other left-over space nearby, the serving counters and cabinets will likely be refurbished or replaced soon.

The adjoining commercially-appointed Kitchen has been use to serve up literally tens of thousands of meals since completion in 1968.

HOICK CONFERENCE ROOM

Dedicated “in loving memory of the Rev. Dr. John Edward Hoick and Grace Hoick”

The room dedicated in memory of the Hoicks was originally furnished as a Chapel. Accessible directly from the office Vesitbule, today Hoick is used as a Conference Room and classroom. The Church Council meets here; as does the Barnsdall Neighborhood Association, Lutherans Concerned and other small groups. Midweek Potluck suppers are held here, which are so much easier to stage since the renovation of the cabinetry and installation of a sink in early 2007—which completes a dream on the original blueprints from 40 years ago!

SANCTUARY [3,400 sq. ft.; 24 ft. high]

The main Sanctuary, completed in the fall of 1924, has changed very little since the 1930s when the elaborate oak paneling was completed.  The Sanctuary seats between 250 and 300 depending on how many pews are in place.

Unusual for a small church in 1924, the floor was "raked" -- sloped down toward the front for better audience visibility, so that the space can be used for performances, concerts or even films.  It is also a wonderful space for medium-sized weddings.  The proportions of the space are also unusually wide, giving better visibility to all.

We are in the process, in 2007-2008, of making upgrades to lighting and ventilation systems, in preparation for the renovation and upgrade of our pipe organ.  (See: "Dear Wheezie" on the News page.)

COURTYARD ARTS AND STUDIO

With the refurbishment of our rear Courtyard over the summmer of 2008, we now have an enclosed, grassy environment for outdoor parties and receptions, complete with a bubbling fountain.  The grass area is approximately 2,000 sq. ft.

Adjoining the Courtyard is a newly-created Studio/Exhibition space of about 950 square feet, which is available for meetings, retreats, and exhibitions.  It is the new home of the collaborative efforts (with a dozen other galleries and studios) of the Los Feliz Art Walk, and opens the first Friday of each month with new exhibits of local artists.
