12 Step Ministry

We salute and uphold the work being done by the many 12-Step recovery programs, including Alcoholics Anonymous and its sister organizations.  Some of our own members are in recovery, and have been a guiding light for this congregation.

It is not widely known that the Oxford Group which led to the formation of what is known today as Alcoholics Anonymous was partly the work of a Lutheran pastor.  This most vital spiritual phenomenon of the 20th cenutry grew out of the Christian Church and stands upon its foundation of faith, trust in God and forgiveness of self and others.

In May 2007 we held our first "12 Step Sunday" to invite the larger community to come and see where one Christian church is taking the steps with all those who are in recovery programs.  We respect the independence and anonymity of the meetings and their members, but the invitation is wide open to all to find a supportive community and ally in recovery in Hollywood Lutheran Church. Another 12-Step Sunday is being planned for September 2008.

Below are the prayers and petitions we offered on May 6:

PRAYER PETITIONS BASED ON THE TWELVE STEPS

1. We admitted we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.

We pray for the powerless in our world, and especially for those whose lives have become unmanageable because of addictions, whether they be alcohol or drugs, power or greed, sex or lust, that God’s light and truth surround them. Hear us, O God: Your mercy is great.

2. Came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

We pray that the presence of God be shown to all who seek God’s power to anchor their lives, so that sanity and hope, reason and compassion may restore all to wholeness. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

3. Made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

We pray for those who wills and ways have brought them to the end of their resources, that in a spirit of emptiness and openness to God’s grace, they may give their lives over to God’s gentle care. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

4. Made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

We pray for all who by faith in God’s guidance and forgiveness are willing to look deep within, and to see themselves in a clear and honest light. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

5. Admitted to God, to ourselves and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

We pray that we may be able to confess our faults, failures, and fears to God and also to another whose counsel is trustworthy and true. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

6. Were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. 7. Humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

We pray for those in recovery, for ourselves, and for all who confess the reality of sin, that in humility we entrust ourselves to the Spirit of God who changes hearts, who frees minds, who redirects the will of anyone who is determined to be whole and healed. We also pray for those in our community who have urgent need of your healing power.  Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

8. Made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all. 9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

We pray for those who are harmed when our own good judgment is impaired or our behavior is out of control; especially we pray for families and friends of those controlled by addictions, that in sincerity and with a right purpose we do all in our power to right the wrongs and repair the damage in people’s lives. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

10. Continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

We pray for faith and patience, to correct mistakes when we make them, to take responsibility for our actions, to keep our willfulness in check and to show love for all people as a sign of your living in us. Hear us, O God:  Your mercy is great.

11. Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

We cannot fully know you, O God, and yet we pray to continually open ourselves through prayer and meditation, that we grow spiritually, and come to know your will and purpose for our lives, so that the power of your Spirit may give us strength. Hear us, O God: Your mercy is great.

12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

We are mindful, O God, that you work through us, and we pray that with your divine power you might use us to carry the message of your saving grace to others, the grace which redeems us, the grace which accepts us when we fail, the grace which guides and motivates us with love. Hear us, O God,
Your mercy is great.
